John Howard and The Ultimate Fighter Season 9 finalist Andre Winner have both been cut following their UFC Live: Barry vs Kongo and UFC 132 fights respectively.
For both fighters this marked their third straight loss in the octagon, a number that often means it’s time to head to the minor leagues for awhile.
“Doomsday” (14-7) interestingly actually has a winning record in the UFC. The twenty eight-year old father of three started out his career in the UFC on a promising 4-0 win streak with split decisions over Chris Wilson and Tamdan McCrory followed by knockouts of Dennis Hallman and Cesar Gracie product Daniel Roberts.
After the victories he came up short in a pair of fights against rising star Jake Ellenberger and perennial contender Thiago Alves, but it was his unanimous decision loss to Matt Brown, who was also on a two fight skid, that resulted in his termination. In a video he posted he talked about his release saying “Yeah, the rumor is true, I got released today. They finally announced it…It is what it is, man, you get three straight losses in the UFC, and this is what happens. You get kicked out of the UFC. I’m not too mad about it. It’s whatever man. I tried my best. My last fight with Matt Brown, I didn’t think I lost, but when it goes to the judges, that’s what happens. My plans right now is either go to Bellator, or DREAM, or something else, whoever makes me the best offer, I’m gonna go there and make some money.”
Winner (11-6-1) has been less than stellar with a 2-4 record in the octagon. An early front runner to win TUF, the British boxer was favored against Ross Pearson but lost via unanimous decision against his teammate. Say what you want about their lack of wrestling, but at least the UK’s finest will put aside friendships to beat the hell out of each other for fifteen minutes. After the finale Winner went on to beat fellow Ultimate Fighter alumni Rolando Delgado by knockout and get the judges nod against Rafaello Oliveira.
This pair of wins marked the end of his success as he went on a streak of losses, being choked out by Dennis Siver and decisioned by Nick Lentz and Anthony Njokuani, the last of whom delivered such a one sided beating that many fans we’re left scratching their heads as to how the Grenadian even managed to see the end of the first round.
While both didn’t fine the success they were hoping for both were entertaining fighters who always brought it and hopefully we’ll see them rack up some wins and find their way back to the big leagues.
